Earlier, he had led a Samajwadi Party delegation to the Raj Bhawan. The former chief minister asked Governor T.V. Rajeswar to order a high-level inquiry into the January 9 police firing in his ancestral village of Sefai in Etawah causing the death of a student, Mukesh Yadav. Demanding the immediate suspension and arrest of Etawah SSP S.R.S. Aditya, additional SP Rampal Gautam and other police officers responsible for opening fire, Yadav charged that they had fired on unarmed students that amounted to cold-blooded murder. According to Yadav, the police had forced its way inside the Choudhury Charan Singh Postgraduate College in Hewra, Sefai. The students were taking their examinations when the cops entered the premises and began hurling abuses at them. When the students protested, the SSP opened fire killing Mukesh Yadav on the spot while two other students Avinish Yadav and Sunil Yadav were seriously injured and are under treatment, Yadav said.
Judge to decide gambling case on Friday
A decision is due Friday in Topeka on a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the state's newly enacted gambling law. Shawnee County District Judge Charles Andrews will issue his ruling at 10 a.m. Friday, according to the court. The decision will be posted on the court's Web site, www.shawneecourt.org. The lawsuit was filed last year by the Kansas attorney general's office to determine whether the new gambling law is constitutional. The law allows large casinos to be built in four areas of the state, including Sumner County. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius urged the filing of the lawsuit to clear up any legal questions surrounding the law and -- supporters hope -- allow casino construction to proceed. The issue at hand is whether the casinos envisioned by the law meet the Kansas Constitution's allowance of a "state owned and operated lottery." Friday's ruling will be just the first step in the lawsuit, which is expected to go to the Kansas Supreme Court for a final ruling.
Indian guru to the Beatles retreats into silence, gives up control of ...
But some argue it is no more effective than many other mind-body relaxation techniques. Movie director David Lynch once extolled the virtues of TM in a speech. "Anger, stress, tension, depression, sorrow, hate, fear — these things start to retreat," said Lynch, a longtime practitioner. "And for a filmmaker, having this negativity lift away is money in the bank. When you're suffering you can't create." The Maharishi's movement claims some 6 million people have become practitioners. But it was not until the Beatles visited his ashram in India in 1968 that the guru became an icon of the counterculture movement. John, Paul, George and Ringo came for spiritual instruction as they struggled to come to terms with the death of their manager Brian Epstein.
It had been all positive
Just four days shy of a potential Super Bowl berth, Moss's own perfect season was interrupted yesterday by disturbing news from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where a woman whom Moss termed "a friend" filed a restraining order against him in Broward County Court. Rachelle Washington's allegations included that Moss committed battery "causing serious injury," and that Moss refused to allow her to seek medical treatment. Washington also checked off "yes" next to inquiries on the petition whether the respondent (Moss) had a drug or alcohol problem, and claimed she had been in an "intimate relationship" with him since 1997. The alleged incident happened while the Patriots were enjoying a bye week from the playoffs. Moss acknowledged being at Washington's home and said he has been friendly with her for 11 years, but vehemently denied the charges.
