Yasuo Fukuda became Japan's 91st prime minister on Tuesday after being selected LDP leader at the weekend and following the abrupt resignation of Shinzo Abe, 53, on Sept. 12 after only a year at the helm. Abe's popularity went into steady decline from 60-per-cent support when he took office -- the same as Fukuda's this week -- to around 30 per cent at the time of his departure. .
Fort Drum soldier dies while on duty
Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 4:24 p.m. FORT DRUM, JEFFERSON COUNTY -- A 10th Mountain Division Soldier died Jan. 28 at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown after complaining of chest pains while on duty. Sgt 1st Class Ritchie A. Morgan, 41, was a food service noncommissioned officer assigned to 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade. He was initially transported to Guthrie Acute Care Clinic where life-saving measures were preformed before he was transported to SMC. Morgan, a native of Murphysboro, Ill., joined the Army in September 1987 and was initially assigned to Korea until January 1988. He was assigned to 6th Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment based at Camp Stanley, Korea, from September 1989 to September 1990. He was reassigned to Fort Carson, Colo., where he served with 2nd Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment.

Among BET's new shows announced last week during its New York upfront presentation is Somebodies, the network's first scripted series about a group of 20-something "slackers" caught between graduating from college and finding a real career, according to network executives. A second scripted series, Wifey — a co production with VH1 — is also in development and could debut later this year. "People have been asking for scripted programming from us for a long time, so I'm thrilled that we're at a point where we can do scripted programming," said Lee. On the animation front, the network will team up with comedian Orlando Jones to create BUFU, an animated sketch-comedy show in the tradition of Saturday Night Live that will premiere this fall. BUFU will join the network's previously announced animation projects, Hannibal and Cipha, both set to premiere in 2008.

SAULT STE. MARIE - The wordsmiths at Lake Superior State University are giving back to English speakers everywhere with their 33rd annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness. On Dec. 31, 1975, former LSSU Public Relations Director Bill Rabe and his colleagues cooked up an idea to banish overused words and phrases and issue a list on New Year's Day. Much to the delight of language enthusiasts everywhere, the list has stayed the course into a fourth decade. This year's list derives from more than 2,000 nominations received through the university's website, www.lssu.edu/banished.
