Time Warner’s Richard Parsons

This time, however, we noticed that he may have been a little preoccupied, possibly because Carl Icahn had just decided to create a new fund to increase his investment groups stake in Time Warner, and therefore gain more leverage in his negotiations with the company. Earlier this year, Icahn, a billionaire investor, proposed that Time Warner split its assets in order to create greater value and improve its languishing share price.

When Parsons took over as the chairman and CEO of Time Warner, one of his first priorities was to appease the companys staff after the disastrous merger with AOL. He also quickly put a stop to the flow of embellished growth predictions the company was feeding Wall Street. Despite the fact that morale inside the company is much better and its conservative estimates are trusted, much still needs to be done to improve its value.

The kinder, gentler energy superpower

In Texas City, a small port town south of Houston near the Gulf of Mexico, a hub of refineries rises through the misty January air, billowing steam from scrubber towers.

These refineries make up part of a sprawling industrial cluster in the Gulf Coast region that is better equipped than anywhere on earth to handle the gooey crude coming out of Alberta's oil sands.

In a twisting turn of geography, geology and history, Texans are hungry for Alberta oil.

As the U.S. seeks to decrease its dependence on crude from unstable regions and OPEC countries, and with the oil sands booming, Canada has supplanted Saudi Arabia as the leading supplier of crude to the U.S., claiming the No. 1 spot in 2004.

If you cant afford a diamond, and goodness knows they dont come cheap, maybe your gal will settle for something pretty for now until you can save up for a real stone.

Maine man puts together 'Ultimate Boston Celtics Fan Trip'

So for the better part of November and December, the long-haul truck driver for Nation's Express.com had a phone to his ear or a computer monitor near his face on an almost nonstop basis.

"The hardest part of it was playing phone and e-mail tag with people and getting dates coordinated and things finalized," he said. "I had to have my Advil out with me a lot."

With all the legwork done, all Cox-Urbach can do is wait to see how many people sign up.

"I have 20 people so far and I'll need at least 50 people to at least break even," said the 35-year-old Deering High School alumnus. "I can take as many as 57 people, but if I don't get at least 50, I won't do it because it wouldn't be feasible."

At first glance, the trip's price tag may seem a bit prohibitive at $1,850 per person, but considering the package includes all game tickets, hotel lodging, meals, round-trip air fare from Providence, R.I., and even some entertainment/sightseeing activities, it looks more like a bargain.

India ready to move on from Harbhajan case

Indian captain Anil Kumble has shown his relief at the ICC's decision to drop the racial abuse charge against team-mate Harbhajan Singh and revealed the issue had been an on-field distraction.

Appeals commissioner New Zealand Justice John Hansen yesterday decided to significantly reduce the three-match ban imposed on Harbhajan after dropping the charge of racial abuse at the ICC code of conduct appeal hearing in Adelaide.

Justice Hansen ruled there was insufficient evidence to uphold the charge but found Harbhajan should be charged with a lesser offence of abusive language and handed down a fine of 50 per cent of the off-spinner's match fee.

Justice Hansen will hand down his full reasons for the decision today at 5:30pm AEDT.

Kumble says the players are now looking forward to concentrating on the games ahead.

Mexico issues warrant for missing Marine

Mexican officials have issued an arrest warrant for a U.S. Marine suspected of killing a pregnant colleague who had accused him of rape, a U.S. Embassy official said Tuesday.

A cousin told reporters last week that Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean visited family in the area of Guadalajara, Mexico, this month, but left without saying where he was headed.

The burned remains of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach were found with those of her fetus earlier this month in a fire pit in the back yard of Laurean's house in Jacksonville, N.C., and Laurean, is being sought on an indictment charging first-degree murder. Both were stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Laurean was born in Mexico and fled after leaving a note for his wife in North Carolina saying that Lauterbach cut her own throat and that he had buried her body.

Death of a family

Atkinson and the friend travelling in the car with him, Tony McClelland, tried to talk to the man but could get no sense out of him until his babble took a new turn: "He just kept on saying he's killed his kids, he has to go home and tell Cindy he's killed his kids, and he just kept saying, 'F---, what have I done?"'

The man said he had had a coughing fit and blacked out; maybe he had "done a wheel bearing" - somehow, his car had ended up in a dam. He said he found himself in water up to his chest. He seemed to be panicky and to have trouble catching his breath.

Atkinson was perplexed. He wondered whether the man had Down syndrome. He didn't believe the local dams were deep enough to swallow a car. The man couldn't even tell him which of two nearby dams he was talking about.
