Unhand my patio heater, archbishop

The Archbishop of Canterbury told the faithful on Christmas Day that unless human beings abandon our greed, we will be responsible for the death of the planet.

Hmm. I’m not sure that I can take a lecture on greed from a man who heads one of the western world’s richest institutions. As we huddle under a patio heater to stay warm while having a cigarette in the rain, his bishops are living in palatial splendour with banqueting halls, wondering where to invest the next billion.

And are the churches open at night as shelter for the homeless and the weak? No, they are locked lest someone should decide to redress the inequalities of western society by half-inching a candelabra and fencing it to buy Christmas presents for his kiddies.

Then we must ask how much old Rowan really understands about the implications and causes of global warming.

Examining Republican Self-Destruction and the Term ‘RINO’

I have been avoiding the discussion of who I am supporting for the Republican presidential nomination in deference to urging others to thoroughly examine the platforms, agendas and records of all those in contention. Only by taking the time to circumvent the agenda-driven propaganda of the mainstream media (and in some cases its non-coverage of certain candidates) can we truly understand who each candidate is and what he – or she – stands for. With both my first and second choices now out of the race I believe it is time to examine the Conservative communities troubling propensity to self-destruct and the accurate definition of the term "RINO."For the record, the two candidates that represented my vision of what leaders should be were – and still are to a certain extent – Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter.

Monday wild card

Seems she didn't have the time to pull around the corner and park. I'll let you decide who to believe. Me? I'm putting my money down on Howard, all the way. (BTW, you can read GoZZZer Ranch propaganda about the project, which was named after homesteader John Gozzer here, about company HQ in the old Blackwell House here, and about its Arrow Point impact here.)

On the last day of Florida's most intense Republican primary campaign ...

If Romney wins, McCain will endure fundraising strains as the race spreads into 19 states voting Feb. 5.Romney, who has tapped into his personal fortune, has outspent his rivals with roughly $5 million in television advertising in Florida.''McCain's campaign has been running like the movie business, where your current movie funds your next movie,'' said political advertising tracker Evan Tracey of TNS Media Intelligence. ``He's kind of living hand to mouth, which could be a big advantage for Romney.''Romney, who has tried to appease voters' concerns about the economy by portraying himself as a corporate turnaround artist, flew by charter plane Monday to rallies in six cities in roughly 12 hours. He started out at sunrise at a West Palm Beach gas station, a backdrop chosen to highlight his opposition to carbon emissions limits that McCain is sponsoring with Connecticut Sen.

Letters to the Editor (Jan. 22)

It is not a good location for more apartment buildings as there are "for rent" signs year round in the area. More student housing is not needed. The city, the neighbors and the developers have tried to work together for six years. Now we have been silenced by the removal of the planned development overlay. No solution has resulted because the developers insist on maximum density, incompatible housing development that will ruin our neighborhoods. The new land development code will not protect us on issues such as unwanted traffic, parking, setbacks and the intersection of Seventh and Western. This property has nothing to do with housing sprawl on the outskirts of Corvallis. The developers are aiming their profit on student housing monstrosities close to OSU. We already have many of these.Look around.

McCain should team up with Romney as vice president

John Edwards is fast becoming an "also ran" and deservedly so.

His good points seem to be nice hair and the fact that he was a loosing vice president candidate four years ago. His apparent program calls for isolation in foreign policy, higher taxes and a strong anti-business program.

It seems that Mr. Edwards doesn't understand that businessmen, principally acting through corporations, create .

Couples ally to highlight foreign adoption woes

CAMARILLO, Calif. -- After months of trying to bring an adopted infant daughter to America from her native Vietnam, a California family has joined forces with eight other U.S. families facing the same obstacle.

The goal is to try and persuade broadcast organizations and media personalities to publicize what's happening to them and why, and to bring public pressure to bear on government officials so they can bring their children home.

Steve and Julie Carroll of Camarillo are among 26 American families caught in the middle of a dispute between the U.S. and Vietnamese governments, according to an immigration attorney representing the nine families.

In September, the couple went to Vietnam, where they adopted two baby girls.

However, the U.S.
