Raining all over the WASL

So far, no complaints, although some at the table felt the gag didn't really work with the story.

Coming up

We're adding a page to tomorrow's paper for hurricane coverage, making room for photos from the scene. We'll also be scanning the blogs for first-person accounts, which we'll compile into a sidebar for tomorrow.

Wild Card/Vacation Day 11 of 12

Only two more shopping days until I return to the final days of the City Council campaigns. Then, we'll have fun taking apart the campaigns. Any dirt yet? Any mudslinging. You know, the good stuff. Or is everyone behaving? My wife is now looking over my shoulder -- literally -- so I have to pretend that I'm just checking ball scores. See ya in two days. Here's Wild Card ...

Britain's new eco battle

At a recent commerce conference in India, where he was trying to sell the advantages of settling businesses in London, he was publicly berated about the city's air transport. An executive of an Indian company stood up and told him: 'Do something about Heathrow.'

It is a sentiment shared by Ric Lewis, chief executive of the London investment company Curzon Global Partners. He spends much of his life flying in and out of cities to generate business for his firm. Lewis knows a thing or two about airports and his opinion about Heathrow is simple: it's a national embarrassment. 'Heathrow is the first experience many people have of the UK. That first impression should be saying, "Welcome to one of the best cities in the world". Instead it says all too often, "Caution: you're about to have a bad day".'

That warning applies to any visitor heading into the airport, says Lewis, but particularly to business travellers.

Georgios Samaras positive on Celtic move

He's good in the air, he has decent pace and technique and scores spectacular goals, although he'd probably swap them for a few more tap-ins. This is a big chance for him."

Celtic can reduce Rangers' lead at the top of the table to a single point, albeit with one match more played, with a victory tonight.

Motherwell, who will join third-placed Dundee United on 38 points with a win, have no injury problems but left-back Jim Paterson completes a two-game suspension.

Raising the Bar

Similar concerns have led some to question the change in requirement. Teresa Aldredge is an academic counselor at Cosumnes River College, an institution where 57 percent of students are from underrepresented minority groups, many of them from low-income families. She noted that over the last nine years, more than 2,000 students at the college were placed in arithmetic as their first math course, and that of those, only 125 made it through elementary algebra. She predicted that half of those would not make it through intermediate algebra, denying an associate degree to people who started at low educational levels and pushed their way up.

She said that "without a doubt," the policy would mean fewer minority students receiving associate degrees. And she said that it was wrong for the state to move ahead in this direction without providing more money for tutoring and advising to help students meet the new requirements.

Independent Hotels Cater to Elite Business Travelers

The big hotel companies — Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, Starwood and the like — dominate the growing sector of high-end business-center hotels. And why not? Chain-affiliated hotels gain competitive advantages through worldwide reservations systems, popular loyalty programs and slick marketing campaigns.

About 130 people attended the New Year's Mayor's Levee in Elliot Lake on Jan. 1.

At the event, Mayor Rick Hamilton acknowledged the efforts of more than 60 young people and community volunteers in the last year. Each received a certificate of achievement, whether they were part of a sports group or worked on a fundraising event.

They restructured, added staff, forged ahead with key projects and set up process and planning for others such as coming up with a new city logo, a more powerful website and a feasibility study for wireless services.

“Our special communication and consultation efforts with our neighbours in Serpent River First Nation and other North Shore communities have given us a good deal of results.
