Google Print Using Bar Code Technology

Newspaper classifieds give so little information and if you could click to an online ad you could get mileage, photos, etc. Another way this could be a welcomed benefit is if you got driving directions, a discount, and for advertisers, a way to track ad responses.

I know Google is creating this to bolster advertising but I can see a lot of applications that could help newspapers become more interactive and possible sell more ads and subscriptions. This is a step to integrate print media with online advertising and content. I’d rather have bar codes on stories than ads, but it’s a good first step. In other words, if I could access more photos, a related blog post, or even the Wikipedia page, I might just renew my weekly subscription to the newspaper. The nice thing about newspapers is that it’s so linear.

Gird for long haul, Kabul tells Canadians

Omar Samad said yesterday that weekend visits to Afghan President Hamid Karzai by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and new Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd are "a political signal … that they consider Afghanistan a very important world issue.

"I hope that the message that this sends to Canadians at this point is that they should look at it as a very critical and strategic world issue that requires long-term commitment," Mr. Samad said.

"Every one of these leaders made it very clear during their visit that Afghanistan matters, that Afghanistan is a long-term engagement and that no one should expect a quick fix."

Barbie Doll embezzler ordered back to jail

That decision came Dec. 19, more than two months after Steidley modified her sentence. In the decision, the appeals court justices agreed Izon's sentence should be modified, "as the forty year sentence exceeds the sentencing range for the crime of embezzlement by an officer after one previous felony conviction." However, the appeals court ruled that Izon's sentence be modified to 10 years imprisonment, along with the $500 fine and $81,000 in restitution she was previously ordered to pay. Some of the delays in getting the review within the required 12-month period from June 2006 include:May 23 — Judge Post set the judicial review to be heard in front of Judge Joe Smith.May 30 — Izon, with legal adviser Tim Wantland, requested a continuance on her judicial review.June 20 — Attorneys Greg Laird and Thomas Kimble represent Izon and make an objection to Judge Smith conducting the review because he was the judge who conducted Izon's preliminary hearing.

It also brought substantial increases in investment, employment opportunities and income levels, and consequent reduction in poverty. We have to privatise the public sector entities to increase quality and production in a competitive manner, he said. Cuba second from last, just ahead of North Korea

The Israeli army's repeated abuses against journalists in the occupied territories and the US army's responsibility in the death of several reporters during the war in Iraq constitute unacceptable behaviour by two nations that never stop stressing their commitment to freedom of expression.

General deterioration in the Arab world The war in Iraq played a major role in an increased crackdown on the press by the Arab regimes. Concerned about maintaining their image and facing public opinion largely opposed to the war, they stepped up control of the press and increased pressure on journalists, who are forced to use self-censorship.

Kuwait (102nd) replaced Lebanon (106th) as the Arab world's leader as regards respect for freedom of expression because of cases of censorship in Lebanon, together with abusive judicial proceedings and an attack on the television station Futur TV.

Dhaka now ready to send ex-premiers abroad for medical treatment

Media reports said Thursday that they fear that the government wants to send them out of the country to curb political dissent.

Party leaders and sections of the intelligentsia had demanded medical treatment abroad for Hasina, 61, who fell sick in the courtroom last Monday, heavily perspiring and displaying signs of fluctuating blood pressure.

Jail authorities had said Tuesday that there was no provision under the law for her travel abroad and that she would have to do with a panel of doctors. In any case, they said, she was 'not cooperating' by giving details of her ailment.

Zia, 62, has also been unwell while in jail since Sep 3 last year. Her party men have complained that she was not receiving proper treatment in jail.

Law and Information Adviser Mainul Hosein told media that both leaders could be sent abroad for treatment, but they need government permission for that.
