OPENING

*Atonement Though they live in an elegantly sprawling English country manse on an exquisitely sprawling garden estate, members of the Tallis family are feeling cranky one summer day in 1935. It is just too, too hot for words. Mother is in bed with one of her "mee-graines," unhappily looking forward to a dinner for 10 this evening. Thirteen-year-old Briony (Saoirse Ronan) has just finished writing her very first play but is getting little cooperation in putting it on from three horrid visiting cousins.

Ottawa fires nuclear safety commission head

The federal government has fired the head of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, days after she publicly accused Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn of interfering with the independence of the arm's-length watchdog. The former head of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Linda Keen, says she will appear at a parliamentary committee about the reactor closure on Wednesday.(CBC)

"The president was aware of the importance of maintaining Canada's and the world's supply of medical isotopes," said the statement from Lunn's office.

"However, given the growing crisis, she did not demonstrate the leadership expected of the president under the existing legislative provisions of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act to put the commission in a position to address the situation in a timely fashion."

Lunn and Keen have been at odds since the 50-year-old Chalk River nuclear reactor was shut down in November, prompting a worldwide shortage of medical isotopes.

Banned: ice slides in the school playground

Place your foot on the snow and begin rubbing it to compress it and make the surface slippery. Continue to do this - with your pals - along the whole length of the slide until you have a shiny and slippery surface. For maximum speed, try coming down on a tin tray, rather than on shoes, but a plastic bag will do too. Before leaving your slide for the night, cover it with as much cold water as possible. This should freeze overnight to produce even better results. Crisp bags or cups are ideal for carrying water, which should be poured thinly along the length of the slide rather than on one spot - you don't want to melt the ice you already have. Water thus applied will leave you with a glistening, super-slippery slide the following day. .

fd of Other (116 days and 22 hours ago) isnt the move here the clothing of corruption in a technically employed tactic......the inability to face up and prove your case justifyingly proves that one wants to use devious ways and means to get their hide off the hook....the very same motive of a corrupt notion..... common face up me lau rai sara mada na vovodea ni vakasama kei na rai.... prove yourself.

To Bulai of Tailevu of Fiji (116 days and 22 hours ago) You don't have to be in Fiji to know the situation in Fiji. Even Bulai though he is in Fiji does not know exactly what is happening around his surroundings.

Johnny D is an educated and successful person.

Bush touts Iraq progess, economic hope

The enemy is still dangerous and more work remains," Bush acknowledged, but with high-profile attacks, sectarian violence and civilian deaths falling, he said progress is unmistakable.

Bush made clear he is not ready to accelerate a drawdown of U.S. forces, which are scheduled to return to pre-"surge" levels of 130,000 by midsummer. He cited a warning from Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, that pulling troops out too quickly risks the recovery of al-Qaida in Iraq and an increase in violence.

Scotland must shape up or face mediocrity, warns Hunter

If Scotland was really a dictatorship, this chat board would be quickly shut down and the contributors traced and punished. So we have one thing in our favour, Scotland is not (so far) a dictatorship despite fears about the nanny state.

Oddly there are no articulate comments in favour of the the McConnell position. And yet the opinion polls show that McConnell is running a strong second to the SNP.

Are the Labour supporters afraid to say anything here, even under the cloak of anonymity? Or are they just too inarticulate to express themselves? Or are they under orders from Joke not to provoke the opposition? Or are they not in the habit of reading the Scotsman publications? Perhaps a combination of all four.

Committee appointments work for Mississippi Delta

He's never going to be able to dominate the process, but he may be able to give a voice to Democrats who otherwise would have been marginalized and forgotten in the halls of the Capitol.Had McCoy given chairmanships to Republicans, they might have spoken more kindly of him. The truth is that McCoy's hardline response to the GOP/ "conservative Democrat" coup attempt was good politics and good policy. It was good politics because this wasn't just gentlemanly competition for a leadership post. Rather, it was a partisan attempt by the GOP and its fellow travelers to take complete control of the legislative process. The Republican use of an ambitious fellow traveler like Jeff Smith was a sign of contempt for McCoy and his supporters. It was as though the Republicans said, "We don't even need to field a candidate to take you down.
