Muslim Bakery head wielded political clout

Politicians knew it. The community knew it. The police knew it.

If you really wanted to connect with voters in troubled northwest Oakland, to show people that you understood the importance of African American self-reliance in the Bay Area's most heavily African American city, all roads led to the late Yusuf Bey and his Your Black Muslim Bakery on San Pablo Avenue.

Bey and his followers knew they had political clout. They used it to great advantage in obtaining money from the city, lenient sentences from judges, and a virtual hands-off approach from the Police Department - even though evidence now shows that the bakery's leadership was implicated in serious crimes.

Jerry Brown - former governor, now state attorney general - understood the importance of the bakery during his successful run for mayor in 1998.

Draft report into Helios crash handed over by Tsolakis

By Menelaos Hadjicostis

GREECE'S chief air accidents investigator yesterday defied predictions of delaying tactics in handing Cypriot authorities a draft report into the causes of Cypriot Helios Airways jet crash that killed all 121 people on board.

Akrivos Tsolakis, the head of the Greek team probing the August 14, 2005 crash of the Boeing 737-300 jet in the hills north of Athens, handed two confidential copies of the 200-page draft report to his Cypriot counterpart Costas Orphanos at the Presidential Palace with President Tassos Papadopoulos looking on.

Dallas, I love you, but I've found Austin

I have waited patiently for the holiday season to expire. Now I'm afraid I must bring up the guy who got caught sprinkling his own dried feces on the doughnut display last summer at Fiesta Mart. For some weeks I have been in possession of new information--a haunting burden for me. I kept expecting him to appear among the carolers. .

Vol State, MTSU start bachelors program for working adults

Volunteer State Community College and the Division of Continuing Studies at Middle Tennessee State University have started a new bachelor's degree pipeline for working adults.

It allows working adults to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in General Business Administration at Vol State and then have those classes apply toward a bachelor's degree at MTSU.

"We have many working adults whose path to promotion is to earn that bachelor's degree," says Dr. John Espey, Dean of Business at Vol State. "This will allow them to start here and complete their degree at Vol State and then transfer to MTSU where they also have many flexible schedules."

MTSU classes have online courses that make it easier for those who would have trouble commuting to Murfreesboro.

A Late Warning of Catastrophe Ahead

Krasnodar Territory Governor Alexander Tkachev called the spill an ecological disaster at a meeting of the territorial administration. Thirty thousand birds have died and the number of fish that have died is uncountable, he noted. The damage is so great that it is hard to assess. It can be called an ecological catastrophe. Tkachev said that one of the main causes of the catastrophe in the Strait of Kerch was the foolhardiness of the ships' captains, who received storm warnings and hoped for luck.

Most of the owners of the ships sunk in the strait say that the captains bear no responsibility for the situation, and the cause was an act of God and late warning from the coast guard of the approaching storm. There are indications that most of the vessels that sank were simply not designed to withstand such conditions.
