Conservative gabbers blast McCain

Its continued resistance to McCain will be ineffective and will hurt both the Republican Party and the radio industry, Medved said.

The long-running hostility toward McCain stems from his failure to follow conservative orthodoxy on issues including immigration, global warming and money in politics, Hewitt said. McCain's endorsement by the New York Times - the newspaper that conservative talkers love to hate - was just another indignity.

Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers magazine, warned against any conclusion that talk-radio hosts would be diminished if McCain were to win the GOP nomination.

"It will give them an opportunity to reposition themselves in a more independent and populist way," Harrison said. Talk-show hosts aren't judged on whom they pick as a candidate, any more than the jobs of football announcers are on the line with their Super Bowl predictions, he said.

Arabella Churchill

Arabella Churchill, granddaughter of Sir Winston Churchill and a co-founder of the Glastonbury pop festival, who has died aged 58 of pancreatic cancer, meant so much to so many people over the years. A huge, indomitable personality who knew her own mind, she chose a very different path from the dictates of convention and her family background. She ploughed her own furrow and was proud of it.

Always intensely concerned for the underdog, she worked tirelessly at her Glastonbury-based Children's World charity, founded in 1981 to help children of all abilities but focusing in particular on those with special needs. She pioneered the annual Glastonbury children's festival, bringing alternative theatre acts to young and old audiences alike. As her friend and next-door neighbour for 20 years, I think I can speak for many in recalling in particular the Natural Magic Theatre Company, Parachute Theatre with their new slant on traditional puppetry - Punk and Judy - and the safe but near the knuckle Happy Sideshow.

Businesses looking for leadership on climate change

A new survey has found that despite the warnings, just 22 per cent of Australian businesses have taken action in response to climate change.

The report surveyed more than 300 business groups around the country that had an annual turnover of $150 million.

It found that four out of five corporate leaders want to take a more active role but expressed concern about the quality of emissions data available.

But Andrew Petersen from PricewaterhouseCoopers, which commissioned the survey, says most agree business needs to do more.

"I think they're eager to see more information come from the Government and I think that they're eager and they have an appetite to develop more understanding within their own business processes," he said.

"We've seen that particularly in the statistic that told us that only 2 per cent of businesses in Australia really have that confidence level."

Fred's Failure

THE IMMIGRATION ISSUE HAS FLIPPED in President Bush's favor. The public now firmly supports toughened border enforcement plus--and this is a big plus for the president--a system for letting illegal immigrants already in America earn citizenship. ... [snip] ... The ones with the politically untenable position are Democrats who want an immigration issue (but not actual legislation) to use against Republicans in November, and Republicans who want merely to increase border security.

The upshot is that an immigration bill appears likely (but not certain) to pass when Congress returns from its Easter recess on April 24--and probably in a "comprehensive" form congenial to Bush and Republican congressional leaders. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and House Speaker Dennis Hastert have indicated they back this approach, not a bill simply calling for stronger border security.

Field lights divide Chathams school board

State funding restrictions left the district's finances looking "pretty bleak," she said. With only a nebulous picture of the costs involved in the proposal, "at this point in time, I cannot vote to accept the gift, even as generous as it is."

Other members expressed their qualified approval for the proposal, and others, while raising questions, did not indicate how they would vote.

Board members Stephen Barna and Rich Ford said they had been in favor of the proposal when it involved two fields. But with Haas field, on which girls' lacrosse and field hockey matches are played, left out, gender equity would be compromised, they said.

Is $40,000 enough?

Board president Eileen Miele-Coppola questioned the sufficiency of the $40,000 that the facilities committee recommended the community group provide, to be held in an account for miscellaneous expenses.
