Chasing the dream, 1 new job at a time

Today, amid parades, volunteer efforts and lectures planned to commemorate the observance of King's birthday - he would have been 79 - scholars, civil rights pioneers and activists such as Moore are urging people to remember King, the champion for economic justice.

Less celebrated than his epic 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech, the Montgomery bus boycott or his oratory gifts is King's anti-poverty crusade.

"People don't recall that the March on Washington was actually called the march for jobs and freedom," said Moore, 55. "When he died, he was working for economic justice issues. He was actively organizing a strong coalition of a variety of races to focus on the poverty issue."

One need look no farther than Baltimore for evidence that poverty and the social ills associated with it remain 40 years since King's death, Moore said.

IV. Human Rights Abuses and the War on Drugs

We still have to pay money back to banks, mortgage companies and loan sharks for her until today. If the police come to confiscate our belongings, we will have nothing left to survive.

The daughter was worried about having her possessions confiscated, because it was common during the war on drugs for those killed or arrested to have their money and properties confiscated in a broad interpretation of Thailand’s anti-money laundering law.

To date, no one has been arrested for the death of Somjit, and there is no sign that any serious investigation has ever been conducted.

Case Study: The killings of Sia-Jua Sae Thao, Somchai Sae Thao, Bunma Sae Thao, and Saeng Sae Thao

On February 12, 2003, just after noon, on the route to Wat Dhama Kaya Temple, Ban Neun Village, in Lom Kao District, Petchaborn Province (about fourteen kilometers from the victims’ village), four men were murdered as part of the war on drugs.

Analysis: Romney, McCain Turn Up Rancor

Not to be outdone, McCain's team unveiled their own video of Romney's face superimposed on the windsurfing body of 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry. "Mitt Romney seems to change positions like the wind," the video says.

The sparring spilled over Friday.

McCain went on the offensive, saying: "I've been a leader. Americans want leaders. They don't want managers."

Romney returned fire, arguing that voters aren't "looking for a talker or a committeeman or someone who loves to get together and debate."

By Saturday, the debate spiraled even further downward.

McCain said of Romney and Iraq: "Now, one of my opponents wanted to set a date for withdrawal that would have meant disaster." Then he added: "If we surrender and wave a white flag, like Senator Clinton wants to do, and withdraw, as Governor Romney wanted to do, then there will be chaos, genocide, and the cost of American blood and treasure would be dramatically higher."

But Romney never supported the public date for withdrawal or a specific date for U.S.

The BIG Immigration Debate

One could walk through at Calais, and again at Dover/Folkestone. I did it more than once.

I hope I have demonstrated that immigrants are are not just one package, and one problem. Indeed, what I might have described as the most in 'demand', or worthy of entry the highly qualified; I could also remind readers, are probably more appropriately deployed, employed in their countries, even if we do need them. For forty years, individuals who train at Universities in this country, frequently stay-on, wasting their nation's investment through paying their fees. Should we be part of this?

Actually, I have no english friends; "not surprised I hear you say"; indeed my friends are Bangladeshi immigrants who arrived 17 to 20 years ago. But my loyalty to them doesn't make me blind to the issues as I perceive them and I hope I'm not treading on their toes.

The 1918 influenza quarantine

Today the Gothic Gates of campus may appear to separate Yale from the rest of New Haven. In 1918, this barrier was taken to the extreme. That year, under fear of the influenza virus, the University placed itself under a virtual quarantine.

Although the wrought-iron gates could not keep the pandemic — the largest and most wide-spread in history — from spreading, the University isolated all students and faculty to minimize the health threat brewing in the city. Already, because of America's simultaneous involvement in World War I, Yale had been transformed into a military training ground for the Army and Navy, with strict regulations governing daily life for civilians and soldiers alike. And with the flu and Yale's subsequent lock-down thrown into the mix, the divide between Yale and the city became even more apparent.

State of the Union: Past highlights

Fresh from his re-election victory, President Bush in 2005 laid out an ambitious plan to reshape the country's pensions programme, Social Security:

We must pass reforms that solve the financial problems of Social Security once and for all.

As we fix Social Security, we also have the responsibility to make the system a better deal for younger workers. And the best way to reach that goal is through voluntary personal retirement accounts.

The White House ran into strenuous opposition to its plans in Congress and made little progress with Social Security reform.
