Campaign 2008

After the longest presidential election in history, we'll all need a stiff one to celebrate. But Svedka vodka and its sexy fembot, "Svedka Grl," aren't waiting. Come February 5's Super-Duper Tuesday, when nearly two dozen states hold primary elections, Svedka is hosting New York and Washington galas to promote its bid to "put a fembot in the White House." Like any good politician, Svedka Grl robs the best themes from the competition.

Just consider the name of her bus: the Straight Shot Express. While other campaigns bring voters to the polls, "I promise to pick up voters from the polls and drive them to the party." There she'll serve the "Cosmo-Politician" and the "Global Cooler." And she'll push some reasonable positions: "Make cocktails, not war," and "Make handbags tax deductible." While she's late to the race, Svedka officials promise that she'll have her Web page up and running soon.

Extra! UIdaho Student Found Shot to Death

A 21-year-old University of Idaho senior was found shot to death early today in his Moscow apartment.
David Robert Boss, a history major and Boise native, was found dead by a roommate about 2 a.m., Moscow police officials said. Boss roommate apparently arrived at the apartment at 1218 S. Main St. about 2 a.m. and found the victim on the floor in the kitchen area of the apartment, according to a press release. The roommate called police. The death is being investigated as suspicious, said Moscow Police Department Assistant Chief David Duke. The apparent cause of death is a single gunshot wound to the head. No gun was found in the apartment, Duke said.

New Legal Challenge for Accreditation

For regional accreditors, the home field advantage may be in danger of disappearing. A preliminary ruling by a federal judge has found that California may not favor the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (known as WASC) over other regional accreditors just because WASC is the primary player in the state.

Editorial comment: Little to show for a long presidency

A year may be a long time in politics, but Mr Bush's prospects of achieving anything new and important in the time he has left are minimal.

The president did reach agreement with Democratic leaders of the House of Representatives on a fiscal stimulus package, and he commended the deal in his speech. Unfortunately, it is a botched job. The White House removed its fastest-acting elements, such as increased unemployment benefits. Senate Democrats are rightly aiming to put them back, despite the president's warnings to desist.

Beyond short-term patch and mend, what will remain of the two Bush terms? The president's boldest domestic ambition – to privatise Social Security – came to nothing. The US electorate was bound to look askance at that idea, even if proposed by a government of unquestioned competence and good faith.

Behind the Edwards Surge: Right Message at the Right Time

Much was made of Illinois Senator Barack Obama's superb speech to a huge crowd of Iowa Democrats at the mid-November Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner in Des Moines. Without a doubt, it helped to propel Obama ahead of New York Senator Hillary Clinton in polls conducted in the weeks after the event.

But Obama's speech in November may not turn out to be the definitional statement of the fight for Iowa.

What could turn out to be the most critical comment of the campaign came from John Edwards in the last debate between the Democratic contenders — and the former senator from North Carolina may well claim the caucus-night victory that is the reward for delivering the right message at the right time.

It wasn't a great rhetorical flourish. It wasn't even a new statement.
